Astonishingly the Chinese automotive production and sales were down by almost 50% to reach 1.205 million and 1.181 million units respectively, down 46.2% and 47.1% month-on-month and 46.1% and 47.6% year-on-year.

Electric vehicles continued to be a bright spot despite the pandemic lockdowns in Shanghai and elsewhere.

Production and sales of new energy vehicles were 312,000 and 299,000 respectively, a year-on-year increase of 43.9% and 44.6% respectively. From January to April, the production and sales of new energy vehicles completed 1.605 million and 1.556 million respectively.

Although the overall production and sales have fallen sharply, the penetration rate has reached a new high 29.6 %.
